Have you ever wondered what are the types of waste in the hospitality sector? Your business is likely to produce large amounts of waste. Especially if you are part of the hospitality industry. Your business must be committed to the environment and adhere to current waste management legislation. In the UK, businesses must complete the Duty of Care for proper waste management as much as any other industry such as manufacturing or offices. This means that it must be disposed of and stored correctly for the safety of those who may come into contact with it. If your business is new you can learn in 5 steps how to choose your waste collection provider.

In the hospitality sector, this may include waste such as bottles, food, paper, plastic and other waste.  Currently, in the UK, the Hospitality and Food Service (HaFS) sectors produce 2.87 million tonnes per year according to WRAP in their overview of Waste in the UK HaFS. This justifies the commitment of businesses to opt for sustainable measures to mitigate environmental impact.

At Prada Contract Services we suggest to our clients a simple alternative separate their waste and easy to understand for those who operate the business.

  • General Waste: This includes waste that cannot and should not be recycled. For example, hand towels, plastic bags, plastic film or wrapping, composite materials, polystyrene, food waste (only when there is no dedicated bin for this waste), food packaging (plastic or wood), napkins, sanitary waste, among others. In short, this is everyday waste that cannot be recycled and is free of any hazardous chemical contamination.
  • Commercial Waste: This includes any waste produced by a commercial establishment. This type of bag allows for any item that cannot be recycled.
  • Recycling: Also known as dry mixed recycling. This includes any recyclable waste such as paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, beverage cans, and food cans. It also includes some types of plastic (make sure the packaging details whether it can be recycled). All of these can be mixed together in one bag and will be re-sorted at the treatment plant.
  • Food Waste: This includes organic elements such as leftover meat and fish (including bones), eggs and dairy products, vegetables, fruits (including peels), bread, coffee grounds, tea bags, flowers (not plastic), among other organic waste. All of these are put in one bag and treated in a plant that composts or converts them into biogas.
  • Glass Waste: Unlike other materials, glass can be recycled infinitely without degrading or losing quality. At Prada Contract Services, our service is oriented towards glass waste produced in the hospitality sector such as bottles of any colour and containing any kind of liquid, glass jars containing sauces, condiments, jam, etc. And even glass containers of non-food items.

Rubbish when collected is transported to waste treatment plants depending on the type of waste. For businesses, a responsible attitude towards the environment is suggested. It is therefore essential to identify each type of waste and to hire a certified waste disposal provider.
